Scan, sign and print on iPhone, step by step

Everything Papiruno does, in the order you'll need it. Most everyday jobs take a few taps and well under a minute — this guide shows the quickest way to each one.

Getting started with Papiruno

Papiruno is a PDF scanner and AirPrint printing app for iPhone. There is no account to create and nothing to set up: open it and start scanning.

  1. Scan turns paper into PDFs: documents, receipts, letters, ID cards and passports, or pages you've already photographed.
  2. Print puts anything on paper: a document from your library, a photo, or a PDF, image or text file from Files.
  3. Library keeps everything you've scanned or imported, searchable by name and by the words inside.
  4. Settings holds your preferences for scanning, printing, cards and the app lock.

Tip Your first 20 documents are free, and every feature works from the start. The number left is shown on the Scan tab.

Tip For printing you need an AirPrint printer on the same Wi-Fi as your iPhone. Most wireless printers made in the last decade support it.

How to scan a document to PDF on iPhone

Papiruno finds the edges of each page, straightens it and keeps it as a sharp, searchable PDF — one page or fifty.

  1. On the Scan tab, tap Scan documents.
  2. Hold your iPhone over the page. The camera finds the page and captures it by itself; turn to the next page and it captures that too. Tap Save when every page is in.
  3. Check the pages in Scan preview. Hold and drag a page to reorder it; select a page to Rotate, Delete or Retake it, or tap Adjust to crop it or change its colour. Add pages scans more, or adds them from your photos.
  4. Type a name, or leave it blank for a dated one, and tap Next.
  5. In Finishing touches, choose the quality and file size, and sign, mark up or redact if you need to. Tap Next.
  6. In Print or save, tap Print, Share or Save to Files — or just Done. The scan is already in your library.

Fastest way Scanning only to file it away? Scan documents, Save, then Next until Done. The defaults are good for most paper.

Tip Fed the same page twice? Papiruno spots pages that look repeated and offers to remove them — nothing is deleted until you say so.

Tip In Adjust, Apply to all gives every page the same colour and enhancement in one tap.

Tip Set your usual colour (Colour, Grey or Black & white) and Auto enhance once, under Settings › Scan filters.

Tip In Adjust, Crop has one-tap choices — Whole page, Top half and Bottom half — handy for a receipt on half a sheet.

Finishing touches: quality, signature and saving

Before a scan leaves the app, you decide how it looks and where it goes.

  1. Drag the Quality slider between Smallest file and Every pixel. The total size updates as you go, so you can make a scan fit an upload limit.
  2. Tap Add a signature, Mark up a page or Redact to finish the document before it is sent. Each can be removed again before you save.
  3. On Print or save, choose the format to share or save: One PDF, or one image per page as JPEG, PNG or HEIC.
  4. Tap Done to close. Printing, sharing and saving all leave the scan open, so you can do all three.

Tip Scanning something you don't want to keep, such as a form you only need to print once? Turn off Keep in my library in Finishing touches.

Tip With Keep originals for editing on, you can reopen a scan weeks later and change its pages, filters, quality, signatures or drawings.

Tip If a few pages came out a few millimetres off the rest, Square up page sizes gives the PDF one paper size throughout.

Photocopy with your iPhone: Quick print

No copier nearby? Papiruno turns your iPhone and an AirPrint printer into one.

  1. On the Scan tab, tap Scan documents and scan the page.
  2. Tap Save, then Quick print under the Next button.
  3. Pick your printer and the number of copies, and tap Print.

Fastest way Ask Siri: “Make a copy with Papiruno”. The scanner opens, and the page goes straight to the printer.

Tip Papiruno remembers the printer you used last, so the next copy is one tap shorter.

Tip Quick print uses your usual print settings, including ink saver if you've turned it on.

Copy an ID card or passport — both sides on one page, at true size

Banks, landlords and employers often ask for a copy of your ID. Papiruno puts the front and back of a card on a single page at their real size, ready to print or send.

  1. On the Scan tab, tap Scan cards & passports.
  2. Pick what you're copying — ID card, Bank card or Passport — then tap to scan the front and then the back (or the photo page).
  3. Lay the card flat on a plain surface and scan. Papiruno crops each side to the card.
  4. Choose A4 or Letter, Side by side or Stacked, and turn on Cut guides if you'll cut the copy out.
  5. Print, share or save. To send the card without the page, choose Just the card, without the page.

Tip In the print options, print at 100% (actual size), not “fit to page” — scaling is what gets the size wrong.

Tip Copying a bank card? Papiruno reminds you to cover the CVV on the back: tap Redact and black it out.

Tip Rather not keep copies of your ID on the phone? Turn off Keep cards in my library in Settings › Cards & passports.

Papiruno prints with AirPrint, the printing built into your iPhone. No printer app, no driver, no account.

  1. Open the Print tab.
  2. Tap Choose from Library for something you've scanned or imported, Print photos for pictures, or Print a file for a PDF, image or text file from Files.
  3. Check the preview, and tap Ink & layout if you want pages per sheet or ink saver.
  4. Tap Print, choose your printer, the copies and the paper size, and tap Print again.

Fastest way Recent documents are listed on the Print tab under Recent in Library — tap one to print it.

Tip Can't see your printer? Make sure it is on the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone, and that Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network › Papiruno is on in the iPhone's Settings app.

Tip Everything in your library prints again as often as you like, free.

Tip Settings › Print history lists the jobs that reached a printer.

Papiruno's Print or save step, with a Print button

Save ink and paper when you print

Print several pages on one sheet, and use less ink on every page — without changing the document itself.

  1. Before you print, tap Ink & layout.
  2. Under Pages per sheet, choose One, 2, 4, 6 or 9. Turn on Draw separator lines to keep pages apart.
  3. Turn on Ink saver and compare the before-and-after preview: lighter pages, same readable text.
  4. Tap Print.

Tip Ink saver only changes the printed copy. What you keep and share is always the scan itself.

Tip To make it your default, go to Settings › Printing and turn on Use ink saver, Print in grey or Remove page background.

Print or save from any app with the Share button

Got a PDF in Mail, a photo in Messages or a boarding pass in a browser? Send it to Papiruno without leaving the app you're in.

  1. In any app, tap the Share button.
  2. Choose Papiruno from the row of apps. If it isn't there, tap More and turn it on.
  3. Tap Print to print it now, or Save to Papiruno to keep it in your library.

Tip PDFs, photos and plain text all work.

Tip Shared photos are saved as they are. To turn a photo of a page into a straightened scan, use Scan from photos instead.

Scan from photos and import PDFs

Pages you've already photographed, and PDFs you already have, can join your library too.

  1. To scan from photos: on the Scan tab, tap Scan from photos and pick the pictures. Papiruno finds each page, straightens it and turns them into one scan.
  2. To import a file: in the Library, tap Import and choose a PDF or photo from Files or your photo library.

Tip You can pick several photos at once, and they become the pages of one document, in the order you chose them.

How to sign a PDF on iPhone

Draw your signature once and place it on any document — a contract, a permission slip, a delivery note.

  1. Open the document in the Library, tap More, then Signatures. (While scanning, it's Add a signature in Finishing touches.)
  2. The first time, tap New Signature and sign with your finger or Apple Pencil — or sign a blank sheet of paper and tap Photograph.
  3. Choose the page, drag the signature into place and resize it.
  4. Tap Apply. The signed document is ready to print or share.

Tip Your signatures are saved, ready for the next form. Manage them in Settings › Saved signatures.

Tip Signed the wrong page? Remove the signature at any time — the document goes back exactly as it was.

Tip Photographed your signature? Under How much to keep, Only the ink drops shadows and paper texture and Faint marks keeps light strokes; Line thickness makes a fine pen bolder.

Redact a PDF and mark up a page

Black out account numbers, addresses or anything private before you share a document. Papiruno redacts for real: the text under the box is destroyed, not just covered, so it can't be copied back out.

  1. Open the document in the Library, tap More, then Redact. (While scanning, it's in Finishing touches.)
  2. Choose a page and drag across anything you want blacked out. Undo takes back the last box.
  3. Tap Apply. Leave Keep a copy of the original on if you'll need the unredacted version.

Tip To write, draw or highlight on a page instead, use Mark up a page in Finishing touches.

Edit pages, merge documents and make copies

A scan isn't final. Fix it today or weeks from now.

  1. Open a document and tap Edit to reorder, rotate, crop or remove pages, or to reopen a scan and change its filters and quality.
  2. To combine documents, tap Select in the Library, choose the documents and tap Merge. They are combined in the order the Library shows them, into a new document; the originals stay as they were.
  3. In a document, More › Duplicate makes a copy to change without touching the original.

Tip Rotate all pages fixes a whole document scanned sideways in one tap.

Compress a PDF for email

Too big to attach? Make a smaller copy in seconds.

  1. Open the document in the Library, tap More, then Share Smaller Copy.
  2. Pick a size and see how much smaller it gets.
  3. Tap Share and send it with Mail or any app.

Tip Only the copy is compressed. The document in your library stays at full quality.

Siri, the widget and Spotlight

Start the most common jobs without opening the app.

  1. Say “Scan a document with Papiruno” to open the scanner.
  2. Say “Print document name with Papiruno” and it opens, ready to print.
  3. Say “Make a copy with Papiruno” to scan a page and send it straight to the printer.
  4. Add the Papiruno widget to your Home Screen to scan documents, scan cards and passports, or open your library in one tap.

Tip The same actions are in the Shortcuts app, so you can add them to your own shortcuts.

Lock Papiruno with Face ID

Keep your passports, contracts and bank letters private, even when someone else is using your iPhone.

  1. In Papiruno, open Settings.
  2. Under Privacy, turn on Lock with Face ID (or Touch ID, or passcode, depending on your iPhone).

Tip With the lock on, Papiruno asks you to unlock it every time you come back, and keeps your documents out of Search and Siri.

Tip Nothing is uploaded to us. Your documents stay in Papiruno on your iPhone, and go only where you send them.

Free documents and the one-time purchase

No subscription, no account, no ads. Every feature is unlocked from the start.

  1. Your first 20 new documents are free. Each new scan, imported file or one-off print uses one, however many pages it has.
  2. Printing, sharing, editing and searching anything already in your library is never counted — it stays free forever.
  3. When you want more, one payment removes the limit for good on every device signed in to your Apple Account. Tap Go unlimited on the Scan tab, or go to Settings.

Tip New iPhone? Open Settings and tap Restore Purchases.
